Smart Detections uses computer vision to detect people, pets (cats and dogs only at this time), and vehicles within your video. It can also detect loud sounds near the camera, along with T3 Smoke Alarms and T4 Carbon Monoxide Alarms. Through this feature, you can customize your video and alert preferences to decide whether you want to see video and alerts for all motion, people, pets, vehicles, and/or sounds, or have them suppressed.
Navigate to Modes and Motion Alerts within the app to customize your Canary experience.
For example, you can set your device to record only people, and send alerts of only people too. You can also set your device to record people and pets, but not vehicles. With this configuration setting, your timeline will be less cluttered, and you will receive fewer, more personalized alerts more tailored for your needs..
Smart Detections are only available on Canary devices that are running firmware version 7.2.0 or above.
How does Smoke and CO Alarm Detection work?
Canary’s Smoke and CO Alarm Detection can recognize standard US T3 and T4 alarm sounds produced by compatible Smoke and CO detectors. Compatible smoke detectors produce three short (0.5s) beeps followed by a 1.5s pause, while CO detectors produce four short (0.1s) beeps followed by a 5s pause. Once enabled in your specified mode, Canary will record a video clip when a smoke or CO alarm is detected.
Smoke and CO alarms that do not follow the standard T3 and T4 patterns will not be identified. Your camera might not also detect a Smoke or CO alarm if the camera is too far from the alarm, or if there are overlapping or echoing alarms emitted.
To run a test, follow these steps:
- In Mode Settings, enable recording and notifications for Smoke/CO alarms.
- Press the Test button on your smoke/CO detector at home.
- Check your phone for a push notification and verify that the event appears in your Timeline.
Why are my pets sometimes detected as people?
Smart Detections uses advanced computer vision algorithms to identify people in your video and send you alerts. Sometimes, pets are incorrectly detected as people (or vice versa). We’re continually fine tuning our algorithms to improve Smart Detections’ accuracy and reduce false alerts, while providing you with security you can trust. You can share videos with Canary to help us to improve our services by tapping on the Provide feedback button on the video entry.
What is the yellow rectangle on the timeline?
The yellow rectangle on the thumbnail of your timeline video represents where Canary's algorithms identified some type of movement triggered by a person, pet, or vehicle.
