What are Canary's modes?
You can set Canary to one of three modes: Away, Home, and Night. You can also customize your Canary to switch between these modes automatically when users leave or arrive home, or you can manually select them from the Canary app’s Home Screen.
- Away mode: When all users are away.
- Home mode: When a user is home.
- Night mode: When a user is home and asleep, based on your schedule.
- Privacy: When you need privacy temporarily, you can turn all cameras at your location off.
Note: Recording in all modes, and alerting in home modes, is available to Canary Premium Service users. To learn more about Canary Premium Service, visit Premium Service.
How do I customize modes?
By default, all locations are set to not record in Home mode, with Watch Live on. Unless your location has Canary Premium Service, you will not be able to customize device behavior in Home mode. Even though video won’t be recorded, you can still Watch Live as long as that function is turned on. Learn more about Premium Service.
Settings for Away and Night modes can be fully configured for all locations, regardless of whether you have purchased Canary Premium Service or have Basic Service. To customize your Mode Settings, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Go to your Mode Settings
1. Tap the Gear icon in the top right corner.
2. Scroll down to Take Action
2. Tap Manage My Modes.
Note: If you would like Canary to automatically switch modes when other members leave and arrive home, make sure Auto-mode switching is enabled. For more information, visit Automatic mode-switching.
Step 2: Select the mode you want to customize
Tap either Away, Home, or Night mode to customize your preferences.
If you have more than one Canary device, you can customize mode settings to apply to an entire location, or customize each individual Canary separately.
1. Tap Set All Devices to customize the entire location
2. Tap Set Each Device to customize each individual Canary
Step 3: Customize Away and Home mode
You can configure Canary to record all motion, people only, or no video when a user is away. If you elect to disable video recording, you can still turn Watch Live on.
If Record video is enabled, you can also choose whether to enable motion or person notifications, or turn off notifications entirely. To learn more about Person Detection, visit How to Enable Person Detection
Premium Service is required to record in Home mode.
Tap the back arrow to save your changes.
Step 4: Customize Night mode
Important: Your Canary will only switch to Night mode if someone is home.
You can configure Canary to record video or not record video when any one user is home using a Night mode schedule. If you elect to disable video recording, you can still make Watch Live available.
You can also choose whether or not to enable motion notifications if you decide to have Canary record video while in night mode.
1. Tap Schedule Night mode to choose what hours you would like Night mode to be enabled.
2. Tap the back arrow to save your changes.
Important: The hours you select should be based off the timezone of the defined location address within the Canary app.
Note: Notifications will be silenced if your phone is set to Do Not Disturb.
How do I set my location to private?
For additional privacy while at least one user is home, you can stop your Canary from recording motion by adjusting your Home or Night mode settings.
Alternatively, if you normally have your Canary set to record while someone's at home and want some privacy, you can use the privacy toggle to temporarily stop all your Canary devices from recording video.
