All Canary Flex devices and most Original Canary devices can be set up with Bluetooth, but some Original Canary View or Pro devices need to be set up with the yellow setup cable.
Some Original Canary View or Pro devices use a 3.5 mm audio cable to securely communicate with your iOS or Android device to authenticate your Canary with our servers, but issues with your hardware or software can interrupt setup.
If you’re unsure whether or not your Original Canary View or Pro is already Bluetooth-enabled, you can learn by checking the following:
- See if there’s a sticker with the Bluetooth symbol on the face of your device
- Hold your finger on the top of your Canary for five seconds, and if the light does not flash blue, your firmware does not support Bluetooth.
- Check the serial number on the bottom of your device
If your device does not flash blue then you will need to attempt setup via the yellow audio cable.
If you're having trouble with setup, try the following:
- Verify that the yellow setup cable is physically secure
- Check your iOS or Android device settings
- Try setup with a different mobile device or audio cable
Verify Setup Cable is Physically Secure
The audio port in the back of Canary can be resistant to securing the yellow setup up cable, so give the cable a firm push to make sure the cable is completely inserted.
Note: Disconnect the yellow audio cable from your phone unless otherwise instructed by the onscreen commands.
iOS Devices
iOS devices must be running iOS 13.6 or newer.
A full list of iPhones that support this iOS can be found here: Supported iPhone models
Increase Music Volume
Verify that your music volume is turned all the way up. Keep in mind that this is separate from your ringer volume. To do this:
- Starting from below your screen, swipe up to reveal Control Center
- Located under your music controls, drag the volume slider all of the way to the right
Volume Limit
You have the option to customize a volume limit for your iOS device. This feature should be turned off to complete the secure setup process.
Note: We suggest restarting your phone before adjusting your volume limit.
- Tap Settings
- Tap Music
- Make sure Volume Limit is off
- If Volume Limit is on, tap on it, and slide the circle all the way to the right
If volume limiting is off, temporarily drag the circle to the left, then back to the right.
Android Devices
Android devices must be running Android 6.0 or newer and have the Google Play store installed by default. Devices running FireOS are not supported.
Note: Some Android tablets meet these requirements and will be able to run the Canary app, but they are not officially supported.
Increase Music Volume
Verify that your media volume is turned all the way up. Keep in mind that this is separate from your ringtone volume on most Android devices.
Volume Limit
You have the option to customize a volume limiting setting for your Android device. This feature should be turned off to complete the secure setup process. To do this, navigate to Settings > Sounds > Volumes and make sure all of the sliders are aligned to the right.
Note: We suggest restarting your phone before adjusting your volume limit.
Pre-installed Third-party Software
Android manufacturers often partner with other services to pre-package software with a particular phone.
For example, some HTC phones come with factory-installed Beats audio software that may need to be adjusted or disabled before attempting to set up Canary.
Custom ROMs
Canary doesn't support custom ROMs, or any operating system that doesn't natively include the Google Play Store, such as Amazon's FireOS.
Apps
Apps designed to limit volume can interfere with audio setup, as well as other types of apps such as custom keyboards, screen savers, screen dimmers, and anti-virus software.
Please temporarily disable these apps during the setup process.
Try Another Mobile Device or Audio Cable
Try Another Mobile Device
If the above steps didn't provide a resolution, please attempt setup with another iOS (or Android) device, as there's always a chance that the issue may be specific to a particular iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
Try Another Audio Cable
If you have another audio cable available, please try using it to set up your Canary. You will need a TRRS (3-ring) audio cable.
